Die Sache ist zu ernst, es hängen

zu viele Hoffnungen armer Menschen

an jedem Schritte, der gemacht

— oder unterlassen wird, als

dass wir uns darüber nicht ver=

ständigen sollten. Ich glaube nun

keineswegs, dass Sie die Arbeit

der Centrale (xx) gänzlich occupiren

wird; Sie sehen, dass auch ich die

Feuilletonredaction der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse]

führen u. die Welt nebenher redi=

giren kann. Eine grosse Arbeit

ist es, u. sie will gethan werden,

aber Sie sind ja zum Glück auch

eine colossale Arbeitskraft und

es handelt sich nur um ein Jahr,

d.h. bis zum Congress von 1899,

den Sie vorbereiten sollen,

wie ich die von 1897 u. 1898

vorbereitete.

Ich weiss nicht, ob ich die Sache

genügend klar auseinandersetze,

denn es spielt ja manches Gemüths=

moment hinein. Den Wunsch,

The matter is too serious, too many hopes of poor people ride on every move that is made, or not made, for us to fail to come to an understanding about this. Now, I certainly don’t believe that the work of the headquarters will completely occupy you; you see that I, for one, am able to run the literary section of the N. Fr. Pr. and to edit the Welt on the side. It is a lot of work, and it must be done, but fortunately you are a tremendous worker yourself, and it is only a matter of one year, i.e., up to the Congress of 1899, which you will prepare, just as I prepared those of 1897 and 1898.

I don’t know whether I am presenting the matter clearly enough, because, after all, many emotional factors are involved.

העניין רציני מכדי שאנו שנינו לא נוכל להגיע בו לידי הבנה — יותר מדי תקוות של אנשים מסכנים תלויות בכל צעד שעושים או שמחמיצים. אינני סבור בשום פנים שעבודת המֶרכּז תעסיק אותך עיסוק מלא; אתה רואה הרי שאני מסוגל לנהל את מערכת הפלייטון של N.Fr.Pr. ולצדה אף לערוך את Die Welt. זו מלאכה גדולה ומן הדין שתיעשה, והרי למרבה המזל גלום בך כוח עבודה אדיר ומדובר בשנה אחת בלבד, כלומר עד הקונגרס של 1899, שאתה אמור להכין אותו כשם שהכנתי אני את הקונגרסים של 1897 ו־1898.

אינני יודע אם הסברתי את הדבר בבהירות מספקת, שהרי כרוכים בו גם גורמים שבמצב־רוח.
