Die müsse ich ausmerzen. Das könne er mich

nicht dem Kaiser sagen lassen. Er! Er? Wer

ist das? Ich hatte den Eindruck des Bedienten

in Dr. Klaus, der in Abwesenheit des Arztes

ordinirt, machte aber ein gleichmüthiges

Gesicht zu den Ueberhebungen des jungen

Mannes. Er wünschte schliesslich, dass ich ihm

das Document noch einmal vorlege, u. das

corrigirte M[anu]sc[ri]pt auch, damit er vergleichen

könne, ob ich das auch richtig gemacht habe.

Ich bemerkte die Impertinenz nicht u. sagte

ruhig: „Gewiss!“

Er meinte noch mit halber Entschuldigung,

dass ja er die Verantwortung habe. Er? Wer?

Dann fragte er mich nicht ungnädig:

„Wo sind Sie sonst angesessen?“

Als ob er nicht Alles ganz genau wüsste.

Eine solche Audienz ist doch nichts Alltägliches.

Davon haben die Herren lang u. viel

gesprochen, über mich geschimpft. Sie sind

offenbar Alle wüthend darüber, dass der

Kaiser sich mit einem Juden so einlässt.

Aber wieder antwortete ich ganz

These I must discard, he said. He could not let me say that to the Kaiser. He! He? Who is he? It reminded me of the servant in Dr. Klaus who treats the patients in the doctor’s absence, but I took the young man’s presumptuousness with an unperturbed expression. He finally desired me to submit the document to him again, along with the revised manuscript, so that he might compare them and see whether I had done things right. I overlooked the impertinence of it and said calmly, “Certainly!”

He added, with half an apology, that after all he had the responsibility. He? Who?

Then he asked me, not ungraciously:

“What city is your usual place of residence?”

As if he didn’t know all this very well. Surely an audience of this sort is not an everyday occurrence. These gentlemen must have talked about it at length and often, as well as grumbled about me. Obviously they are all furious that the Kaiser should pay so much attention to a Jew.

But again I gave a very calm and modest answer: “In Vienna.”

את אלה עלי להוציא. את הדברים הללו אין הוא יכול להרשות לי לומר לקיסר. הוא! הוא? מי זה "הוא?" כאילו עמד לפנַי המשרת במחזה דוקטור קלאוס, המטפל בחולים בהיעדר הרופא. ואולם לבשתי ארשת של אדישות אל מול יהירותו של האיש הצעיר. הוא ביקש שאשוב ואגיש לו את המסמך ואתו את כתב־היד המתוקן, כדי שיוכל להשוות ולוודא שתיקנתי הכול כראוי. לא הגבתי על החוצפה ואמרתי בשלווה: "כמובן!"

הוא אף הוסיף וציין, ספק מתנצל, שהוא נושא באחריות. הוא? מי?

אחרי זה שאל אותי, לא בחוסר־נימוס:

"היכן אתה מתגורר בדרך־כלל?"

כאילו לא ידע הכול במדויק. ריאיון כזה הרי איננו דבר של יום־יום. האדונים הללו ודאי שוחחו על כך הרבה ובאריכות, ודאי כעסו עלי. מן הסתם כולם זועמים על שהקיסר מקדיש תשומת־לב כזאת ליהודי.

גם הפעם השבתי בשלווה ובצניעות: "בווינה".
