welches der Sultan mir im vorigen Jahr anbot! Der Vortrag war von einigen Details abgesehen mordslang= weilig. Was mich am Meisten interessirte, war die auffallend grosse Zahl intelligent blickender junger Egypter, welche den Saal gedrängt füllten. Das sind die kommenden Herrn. Es ist wunderbar, dass die Eng= länder das nicht sehen. Sie glauben, Sie werden es ewig mit Fellachen zu thun haben. Heute genügen ihre 18,000 Mann Truppen für das grosse Land. Aber wie lange noch? Es ist dieselbe englische Verwegenheit u[nd] Kaltblütigkeit, mit der sie die Noten der Bank v[on] England nur schwach mit Metall bedecken. Diese Verwegenheit macht

Apart from a few details, the lecture was dreadfully boring. What interested me most was the striking number of  intelligent-looking young Egyptians who packed the hall.

They are the coming masters. It is a wonder that the English don’t see this. They think they are going to deal with fellahin forever.

 

Today their 18,000 troops suffice for the big country. But how much longer?

 

It is the same English boldness and cold-bloodedness which makes them give the notes of the Bank of England only weak metal backing.

הארץ שהציע לי הסולטאן בשנה שעברה!

חוץ מפרטים אחדים, היתה ההרצאה משעממת עד מוות. בעיקר עניין אותי מספרם הרב של המצרים הצעירים בעלי המבט האינטליגנטי שגדשו את האולם.

אלה האדונים לעתיד לבוא. מפליא שהאנגלים לא מבחינים בכך. הם סבורים שלעולם ועד יהיה להם עסק עם פלאחים.

היום די בצבא של 18 אלף החיילים שלהם בשביל הארץ הגדולה הזאת. אך עד מתי? זו אותה נועזות ואותו קור רוח העומדים להם כשאין הם דואגים ששטרי הכסף המודפסים על־ידי Bank of England יהיה להם כיסוי מלא במתכת יקרה.
