Is this the reply to all the friendliness which I have evidenced, to all the services rendered, or at least offered, to these gentlemen of Constantinople over the last four years?

What is the source of this dispatch date-lined Constantinople? What is certain is that the news has been reprinted by a great number of papers. The correspondent of the Daily Mail had confirmation of it at the Turkish Embassy in Vienna. Was it H. E. Mahmud Nedim Bey? It doesn’t matter to me what the source is, since it hasn’t been denied. And I am tired of being taken in. So much the worse for Turkey if it doesn’t want us. But then why would we be stupid enough to do favors?

האם זו התשובה לכל מעשי הידידות שעשיתי ולכל השירותים שנתתי, או למצער ההצעות שהצעתי, לאדונים הללו בקושטא בארבע השנים האחרונות?

מנַין באה הידיעה הזאת שיצאה מקושטא? ודאי הוא שהידיעה הופצה למספר רב של עיתונים. סופר Daily Mail קיבל אישור על כך בשגרירות טורקיה בווינה. האם זה הוד מעלתו מחמוד נֶדים בֵּיי? לא אכפת לי מנין נובעת הידיעה, הרי היא לא הוכחשה. ושבעתי מן העובדה שמשטים בי. חבל על טורקיה, אם איננה רוצה בנו. מדוע אפוא נהיה טיפשים כל־כך ונציע לה שירותים?
