hatten, ihm aus den armseligen Schekel=

geldern eine Sinekure von 1800 fl

bis vier Briefe per Woche schreibt,

pumpt er die Studenten arm.

Kellner, mein liebster, bester Freund,

dessen Besuche die Lichtpunkte in

all den Verdriesslichkeiten sind,

sprach erzählte neulich eine Jugend=

schulerinnerung aus dem Cheder. Er

träumte in einer Stunde, als in

der Bibel die Stelle kam, wo Moses

singt. II Moses] Kap[itel] 15.

Ich las die Stelle gleich nach u. sie

ergriff mich. Plötzlich schoss mir die

Idee auf, ein biblisches Drama „Moses“

zu schreiben. Die Zustände in Egypten,

der Kampf nach Innen u. Aussen, der

Auszug, die Wüste, Mosis Tod. Ich

denke mir ihn als einen grossen,

Kellner, my dearest, best friend, whose visits are bright spots amidst all the difficulties, reminisced the other day about schoolboy days in the heder. He was daydreaming in a class when they got to the place in the Bible where Moses sings: Exodus, 15.

I immediately looked up the passage, and it moved me. Suddenly the idea popped into my mind to write a Biblical drama, Moses.

The conditions in Egypt, the internal and external struggles, the exodus, the desert, Moses’ death. I imagine him as a tall, vital, superior man with a sense of humor.

הוא מעמיד את עצמו כמי שמתנכרים לו, קדוש מעונה, ואף־על־פי שבחולשתנו יצרנו בשבילו קצבה של 1,800 גוּלדֶן לשנה מתוך כספי השקל העלובים, שתמורתם הוא כותב שלושה־ארבעה מכתבים בשבוע, הוא סוחט את כיסיהם של הסטודנטים.

קֶלנֶר, היקר והטוב שבידידַי, שביקוריו הם נקודות האור בתוך כל העניינים המרגיזים הללו, סיפר לי באחרונה זכרון־נעורים מן ה"חדר". באחד השיעורים, כשהגיעו לפרק "אז ישיר משה", שמות ט״ו, שקע בחלום.

מיהרתי לקרוא את הפסוק והוא ריגש אותי מאוד. בִּן־רגע עלה בדעתי לכתוב דרמה תנ״כית — "משה".

התנאים במצרים, המאבק כלפי פנים וכלפי חוץ, היציאה, המדבר, מות משה. אני רואה אותו בעיני רוחי איש גדול, מלא חיים, משכמו ומעלה, שקול, בעל חוש־הומור.
