Willen sich aufrechthält. Er ist der

Führer, weil er es nicht sein will.

Es ordnet sich ihm alles unter,

weil er keinen persönlichen Wunsch

hat. Ihm ist es nicht um das Ziel,

sondern um die Wanderung zu thun.

Erziehung durch die Wanderung.

I Act Heimkehr Mosis nach Egypten.

Zustände, Erbärmlichkeit der Israeliten,

Moses rührt sie erbittert auf.

II Act Korah.

III Act das goldne Kalb

V Act Mosis Tod.

Schaugepränge in der Wüste: die

Bundeslade, dann Josefs Gebeine an

der Spitze des Zugs.

Der alternde Moses erkennt immer

wieder Korah, das Kalb, immer die=

selben Sclavenzüge. Er wird von

alledem müde u. muss sie doch mit

The drama: how he is shaken inwardly and yet holds himself upright by his will. He is the leader, because he does not want to be. Everything gives way before him, because he has no personal desire. He does not care about the goal, but about the migration. Education through migration.

Act I. Moses’ Return to Egypt. Conditions, wretchedness of the Israelites; Moses, embittered, shakes them up.

Act II. Korah.

Act III. The Golden Calf.

Act IV. Miriam.

Act V. Moses’ Death.

Pageantry in the desert: the Ark of the Covenant, then Joseph’s bones at the head of the procession.

The aging Moses keeps recognizing Korah, the Calf, always the same processions of slaves. He is exhausted by all this, and yet he has to lure them onward with ever renewed vigor.

הדרמה — כיצד נפלה רוחו ואף־על־פי־כן הוא נשאר עומד איתן, נשען על רצונו. הוא המנהיג, משום שאינו רוצה להיות כזה. הכול נשמעים לו, משום שאין הוא מבקש דבר לעצמו. לא היעד עיקר לו, כי אם הנדידה. חינוך באמצעות הנדידה.

מערכה ראשונה: שובו של משה למצרים. התנאים, מצבם העלוב של בני־ישראל [במקור: der Israeliten], משה ממריד אותם במר־לִבו.

מערכה שנייה: קוֹרח.

מערכה שלישית: עגל־הזהב.

מערכה רביעית: מרים.

מערכה חמישית: מות משה.

מראות פאר במדבר: ארון־הברית, אחר־כך עצמות יוסף בראש המסע.

משה המזדקן נזכר שוב ושוב בקורח, בעגל־הזהב, תמיד אותם סממני עבדות. הוא מתעייף מכל זה, אך הוא בכל זאת חייב לחזור ולחדש את כוחותיו, כדי למושכם אחריו הלאה.
