Für Sie, mein sehr verehrter Freund,

ist die Judensache eine theologische. Aber

sie ist auch eine politische u. zw. sehr

actuelle. Sie wissen, dass religiöse Gefühle

und in jüngster Zeit der überall auftau=

chende Antisemitismus in den breiten unteren

Massen der Juden aller Länder eine

starke Sehnsucht nach Palästina erweckt

haben. Sie wissen, dass Hunderttausende

zur sofortigen Wanderung bereit sind und

dass … später die zu vermuthen ist, dass

ihnen später noch mehr Hundertausende

folgen würden.

Das ist ein Element — ein neues aller=

dings — womit die englische Politik im Orient rechnen

könnte und sollte. Lord Salisbury könnte

damit einen Meisterstreich ausführen. Bei

der jetzigen Zuständ von der russisch französischen

Entente beherrschten Weltlage würde eine

For you, my dear friend, the Jewish cause is a theological matter. But it is also a political one, and a very timely one. You know that religious feelings, and, most recently, anti-Semitism which is emerging everywhere, have aroused a strong yearning for Palestine among the broad masses of the Jews of all countries. As you know, hundreds of thousands are ready for immediate migration and it may be surmised that hundreds of thousands more would follow them later.

This is a factor—a new one, to be sure—which English policy in the Orient could and should reckon with. Lord Salisbury could execute a masterly stroke with it. With the present situation of the world, one dominated by the Russo-French entente, a partition of Turkey would put England at a serious disadvantage.

זה יסוד — חדש אמנם — שהמדיניות האנגלית באוריינט תוכל להביא בחשבון, והיא אף צריכה לעשות זאת. הלורד סוֹלסבֶּרי יוכל לחולל בזה מעשה של רב־אמן. במצב העולם של עכשיו, הנשלט על־ידי ההבנה הרוסית־הצרפתית, יכולה חלוקתה של טורקיה לקפח מאוד את חלקה של אנגליה.
