Hechler war bei mir, brachte einen

Zeitungsausschnitt, welcher meldet, dass

der deutsche Kaiser im nächsten Herbst

nach Palästina gehen wird.

Wir kamen überein, dass ich ihm

Hechler einen zur Vorlage an den Kaiser

bestimmten Brief schreiben werde. Die

Zeit ist allerdings ungünstig. Der

Scandalprocess, der sich an die Fälschung

des Breslauer Zarentoasts knüpfte,

dürfte den Kaiser missmuthig und

misstrauisch gegen Journalisten gemacht

haben.

I did not believe the idea would be realized the way I had outlined it in my pamphlet. But I did believe that a Jewish State will come into being, with a partial continuation of the Diaspora, because all peoples now live in such a diaspora.

Hechler came to see me and brought me a newspaper clipping to the effect that the German Kaiser will go to Palestine next autumn.

We agreed that I shall write him, Hechler, a letter intended to be submitted to the Kaiser. The moment, to be sure, is not propitious. The scandal trial which followed in the wake of the falsification of the Breslau Czar toast has probably put the Kaiser in a bad mood and made him suspicious of journalists.

אינני מאמין בהגשמתו של הרעיון בַּצורה שהתוויתי אותה בחיבורי. ואולם אני מאמין שמדינת־היהודים תקום, בעוד התפוצה תמשיך ותתקיים בחלקה, באשר כל העמים חיים היום עם תפוצה מעין זאת.

הֶכלֶר היה אצלי, הביא עמו קטע מעיתון שנאמר בו שהקיסר הגרמני יצא בסתיו הבא לארץ־ישראל.

הסכמנו שאכתוב לו, להֶכלֶר, מכתב המיועד להיות מוגש לקיסר. ואולם השעה אינה נוחה. המשפט השערורייתי הקשור לזיוף דברי הברכה במפגש עם הצאר בבּרֶסלאוּ, מן הסתם העכיר את רוחו של הקיסר והִטה את לבו נגד העיתונאים.
