Als ich um ¼  7 in Yildiz eintraf, stellte man mich dem greisen Karatheodory Pascha (Alexander) genannt der Grosse Karatheodory, der den Berliner Vertrag mit gemacht hatte, vor. Er hat vom Sultan den Auftrag, mein streng geheimes Exposé zu übersetzen. Ich hatte es an Ibrahim die Nacht zuvor in unversiegeltem Couvert geschickt. Ibrahim sagte mir sehr klug, er habe es gar nicht gelesen, so dass er Jedem sagen könne, er habe es nicht gelesen. Ich glaube das nicht. Der arme alte Karatheodory schwitzte hörbar bis ¼ 1 Uhr Nachts bei der Uebersetzung, die ich mitunterzeichnen u. mit meinem Siegel an den Sultan couvertiren musste. When I arrived at Yildiz at a quarter past six, I was introduced to aged Karatheodory Pasha (Alexander), called the great Karatheodory, the co-author of the Berlin treaty. He has instructions from the Sultan to translate my strictly confidential memorandum. I had sent it to Ibrahim in an unsealed envelope the night before. Ibrahim told me very shrewdly that he hadn't even read it so he could tell everyone that he hadn’t read it. I don’t believe that.

 

Poor old Karatheodory sweated audibly until 12:15 a.m. over the translation which I had to co-sign and put in an envelope addressed to the Sultan and bearing my seal. At 12:15 Tahsin was called, and I turned the envelope over to him.

עם הגיעי ליילדיז בשעה שש ורבע הציגו לפני את הישיש קאראתיאוֺדוֹרי פֶּחָה (אלכסנדר) המכונה קאראתיאוֺדוֹרי הגדול, שנכח בקונגרס ברלין. הסולטאן ציווה עליו לתרגם את התזכיר שלי, שהוא סודי ביותר. שלחתי את התזכיר בלילה הקודם אל איבּרָהים,

* הרצל נזקק כאן למימרה Hoffart muss leiden, כלומר בעבור חיים גאוותניים יש לשלם, ומתאים אותה לנסיבות בהופכו את המלה Hoffart – גאוותנות – ל־Hoffahrt – נסיעה אל חצר המלכות – וכך מקנה לדברים כפל משמעות אירוני.

במעטפה ללא חותם. איבּרָהים אמר לי בתבונה רבה שלא קרא אותו כלל, כדי שיוכל לומר לַכּול שלא קרא אותו. אינני מאמין שזה נכון.

הישיש קאראתיאוֺדוֹרי המסכן הזיע נורא על התרגום עד רבע אחר חצות, וצריך הייתי לחתום עליו גם אנוכי ולהטביע את החותם שלי על המעטפה. ברבע אחר חצות קראו לטאחסין ומסרתי לו את המעטפה.
