Gestern noch ein Tag in entnervend =

ster Erwartung verbracht.

Um 5 vergeblich auf der Bahn.

Die Commission kam erst um

11 Uhr Nachts, vergnügt, nussbraun.

Dann las mir Goldsmid

in Gegenwart der Anderen in

meinem Salon bis ½ 1 den

Bericht vor, den ich ungefähr

so vorhergesehen hatte.

Ich wünschte nur, dass der im Satz:

„Unter jetzigen Umständen unbe=

siedelbar — aber, wenn Wasser

herbeigeschafft wird, besiedelbar“

der erste Theil wegbleibe.

Ferner dass der Grund warum

wir das Land bis z[um] 29^eBreitegrad

haben wollen, nicht erwähnt werde[.]

Heute schicke ich Goldsmid zu

Boyle u[nd] lasse den Bericht

typewriten.

March 27, Cairo

Yesterday spent another day in a most unnerving state of waiting.

At 5 in vain at the train station.The commission didn’t arrive until 11 o’clock at night, in good spirits and brown as berries.

Then, in my drawing room and in the presence of the others, Goldsmid spent till 12:30 reading to me the report as I had roughly foreseen it.

I only wish that the first part of this sentence were omitted: “Under the present circumstances, cannot be settled—but if water is made available, it can be settled.”

Also, the reason why we want to have the land up to the 29th parallel should not be mentioned.

Today I am sending Goldsmid to see Boyle and am having the report typewritten.

27 במארס (1903), קהיר

אתמול עבר עלי עוד יום של המתנה מתישה ביותר.

בשעה חמש ו־36 דקות הייתי בתחנת הרכבת; לשווא. המשלחת הגיעה רק בשעה אחת עשרה בלילה, חבריה במצב רוח מרומם, שזופים.

אחר־כך, בסלון שלי, קרא לפנַי גוֹלדסמיד בנוכחות האחרים, עד אחת וחצי בלילה, את הדוח, שכך חזיתי אותו.

לא ביקשתי, אלא שבַּמשפט: ״בתנאים של עכשיו – לא כשיר להתיישבות, ואולם אם יובאו לשם מים יהיה כשיר להתיישבות" יימחק חלקו הראשון.

ועוד, שלא תוזכר הסיבה מדוע אנו רוצים את השטח עד קו הרוחב 29°.

היום אני שולח את גוֹלדסמיד אל בּוֹיל ואני מוסר את הדוח לכתיבה במכונת כתיבה [במקור: typewriten].
