solle garantiren, dass kein „tollé générale“ in

Europa entstünde, wenn der Sultan mich

empfinge.

Ich antworte: sie sollen mir die Audienz

verschaffen u. das Uebrige Allah überlassen

u. den Audienzbakschisch einstecken

A fatuous letter from Crespi: I am to guarantee that no tollé général [general outcry] would result in Europe if the Sultan received me.

I am answering: Get me the audience, pocket the audience baksheesh, and leave the rest to Allah.

ואף־על־פי כן, זו יכלה להיות העִסקה המבריקה ביותר של חיי: שאילי הון נוצרים, בברכתה האוהדת של ממשלת אוסטריה, יְיַסדו בשבילי עיתון שאוכל לפעול בו בעוצמה למען רעיונות נעלים מאוד.

אבל מעניין היה לדעת מדוע העניין נכשל. האם משום שגילו שאני ציוני? אחרי שארשום עוד גם את הדבר הזה, יסתיים הסיפור בשבילי ובשביל היומן שלי.

אני עונה: שיסדירו לי את הריאיון, ואת כל היתר ישאירו בידי אללה, וישלשלו לכיסם את הבאקשיש תמורת השגת הריאיון.
