Gefahr, kein Werk der Welt u. kein Ver=

mögen meinen Kindern zu hinterlassen.

Es wäre lächerlich zwei Tage vor der Ab=

reise den Roman wieder vorzunehmen. Aber

ich gebe mir mein Ehrenwort, dass es gleich

nach der Rückkehr geschieht.

31 Jan[uar 1901] Abends

Bis jetzt habe ich eigentlich noch geglaubt,

dass etwas aus der Zeitungssache werden würde.

Nachdem ich nun bis zur Stunde kein Lebenszeichen

erhielt — Donnerstag Abends — u. ich mich nur

bis Ende dieser Woche zur Verfügung gestellt

hatte, ist an der negativen Beendigung nicht

mehr zu zweifeln.

Ich fühle davon ein Unbehagen

4 Feber [1901] Paris

Bis zum letzten Augenblick vor meiner

Abreise hoffte ich eine Nachricht in

der Zeitungssache zu bekommen.

Nichts. Mort et enterré.

I am in danger of leaving no work to the world and no property to my children.

It would be ridiculous to take up the novel again two days before my departure. But I am giving myself my word of honor that I will do so right after I return.

January 31, evening.

Until now I actually still believed that something would come of the newspaper project. But since I have had no sign of life up to now—Thursday evening—and I had placed myself at their disposal only until the end of the week, there can no longer be any doubt of the negative conclusion.

It has left me with an uneasy feeling.

February 4, Paris

Until the last moment before my departure I hoped to get some word on the paper project.

Nothing. Mort et enteré [dead and buried].

אורבת לי הסכנה שלא אותיר אחרי שום מפעל לָעולם ושום רכוש לילדַי.

מגוחך יהיה להמשיך לעבוד על הרומן יומיים לפני הנסיעה. אבל אני נשבע לעצמי בהן־צדק שמיד אחרי שובי אעשה זאת.

31 בינואר [1901] בערב

עד עכשיו עוד האמנתי, בעצם, שיצא משהו מעניין העיתון. היות שעד השעה הזאת, יום ה׳ בערב, לא קיבלתי שום סימן חיים, והעמדתי את עצמי לרשותם רק עד סוף השבוע הזה, אין עוד להטיל ספק בסוף השלילי.

אני מרגיש אי־נוחות מכל העניין הזה.

4 בפברואר [1901], פאריס

עד הרגע האחרון לפני נסיעתי קיוויתי לקבל ידיעה בעניין העיתון.

לא כלום. Mort et enterré (מת ונקבר).
