Wir sprachen dann von

England, vom letzten Krieg

England gestärkt hervorging,

weil die Nationaleinheit

der Colonien sich zeigte. Dies

meine Ansicht — es gebe freilich

Engländer die das Gegentheil

behaupten.

Darauf sagte Alexandre Pacha:

„Il y a toujours des anglais

qui disent le contraire.“

Auch sehr hübsch.

Ich hatte ursprünglich aus

den Lackstiefeln, in denen

Karatheodory erschienen war,

whom he had once handed a bouquet of roses at the conference table.

“A tout propos il savait des anecdotes. Tout lui était arrivé [He had anecdotes for any occasion. Everything had happened to him]."

I consider this “tout lui était arrivé" a masterful character sketch in four words.

אחרי זה דיברנו על אנגליה, על המלחמה האחרונה בדרום־אפריקה, שאנגליה־רבתי יצאה ממנה מחוזקת, כי הובלטה האחדות הלאומית עם המושבות. זו דעתי – יש אמנם אנגלים שטוענים את ההפך.
