Er hatte einige groteske Einfälle: er

würde sich lieber vor dem Tempel in der

Seitenstettengasse todtschlagen lassen,

ehe er den Antisemiten nachgäbe. Er

„will nicht die Flucht ergreifen“ u. was

der bekannten Scherze mehr sind. Er

sprach auch von der „Mission des Juden=

thums“, welche darin bestehe, in aller

Welt zerstreut zu leben. Von dieser

„Mission“ sprechen Alle (xx) denen es

am jetzigen Wohnorte gut geht — aber

auch nur die.

19 März [1897]

Wieder ein Gespräch mit Bacher. Wir

gehen jetzt immer zusammen vom

Bureau weg. Er möchte mit mir

eine Reise nach Palästina machen

und als ich ihm den Reiseprospect

der von Cook arrangirten Macca=

baean Club=Tour zeigte, erzählte er

mir eine alte Prager Legende, die er

in seiner Jugend gehört hat:

He had some grotesque ideas: he would rather let himself be killed outside the Seitenstettengasse synagogue than yield to the anti-Semites. He “will not take flight,” and all the other old chestnuts. He also spoke about the “mission of Jewry,” which consists in being dispersed throughout the world. This mission is talked about by all those who are doing well in their present places of residence—but they are the only ones.

Another talk with Bacher. Now we always leave the office together. He would like to take a trip to Palestine with me; and when I showed him the prospectus of the tour which Cook has arranged for the Maccabean Club, he told me an old Prague legend which he had heard in his youth.

היו בפיו כמה הערות גרוטסקיות: הוא יעדיף שיהרגו אותו ליד בית־הכנסת בזייטֶנשטֶטֶנגאסֶה ולא ייכנע לאנטישמים, הוא "אינו רוצה לנוס על נפשו", ועוד פנינים ידועות מן הסוג הזה. הוא אף דיבר על "שליחותה של היהדות", שפירושה לחיות בפזורה בעולם כולו. על "השליחות" הזאת מדברים כל אלה שטוב להם במקומות מגוריהם היום — אבל אלה בלבד.

שוב שיחה עם בּאכֶר. באחרונה אנו נוהגים לצאת יחד מן המשרד. הוא היה רוצה לצאת אתי למסע לארץ־ישראל, וכשהראיתי לו את הפּרוֹספֶּקט של נסיעת מועדון המכבים שאורגנה על־ידי חברת קוּק, סיפר לי אגדה עתיקה מפראג ששמע בנעוריו:
