Es wäre vielleicht nicht uninteressant,

auch darauf hinzuweisen, dass das Friedens=

manifest des Czaren gerade während des

Baseler Congresses bekannt wurde u. dass

der Congress auf diese telegraphische Nach=

richt sofort eine begeisterte Zustimmungs=

kundgebung beschloss, die erste solche, die von

einer Vertretungskörperschaft ausging.

6 Februar [1899]

Gestern mit Suttners soupirt. Die Baronin

erzählte mir, sie sei vorgestern mit dem Bot=

schafter Kapnist beisammen gewesen. Dieser

sagte ihr, Graf Murawiew habe ihm geschrieben,

dass jetzt von der verlangten Audienz keine

Rede sein könne, obwol die Motive unserer

Bewegung wohlwollend anerkannt werden

Postscript:

It might not be without interest to point out that news of the Czar’s peace manifesto happened to break during the Basel Congress, and that the Congress responded to the telegraphic news by immediately passing an enthusiastic resolution of concurrence, the first such resolution to come from a representative body.

Dined yesterday with the Suttners. The Baroness told me that two days ago she was in the company of Kapnist, the ambassador. He told her he had received a letter from Count Muraviev saying that the requested audience was out of the question now, although the motives of our movement were looked upon benevolently.

אולי לא יהיה זה בלתי־מעניין להעיר גם שעל כרוז השלום של הצאר נודע דווקא בעת קונגרס באזל, ושהקונגרס החליט מיד לפרסם הודעת הזדהות נלהבת, הראשונה מטעם גוף מייצג.

אתמול ארוחת ערב עם הזוּטנֶרים. הבּרֹונית סיפרה לי שנפגשה שלשום עם השגריר קאפּניסט. הוא אמר לה שהגראף מוּראבְיֶב כתב לו שהריאיון המבוקש לא יכול לבוא בחשבון עכשיו, אף־על־פי שרואים בעין יפה את מניעי תנועתנו.
