Sprung in zu grosse Erwartungen über. Kellner

kaute ein bischen an dem Gedanken herum:

dass ich als Unternehmer ja meine Arbeit

gratis in das Blatt hineinstecken könne,

dass aber Andere doch auf dem Honorar=

standpunkte stehen müsste[n].

Darauf bat ich die Herren, sich doch in

das Verhältniss des Miteigenthums zum

Blatte zu stellen, indem sie entweder

Geld oder Arbeit darin anlegen.

Geld wollte Keiner dazu geben, Kellner

aber versprach, seine Arbeit gegen

eine Gewinnbetheiligung dazu beizusteuern,

womit ich sehr zufrieden war

15 Mai [1897]

Kellner hat abgesagt. Er muss dem=

nächst auf zehn Wochen nach England.

Demnach kann von seiner Mitredaction

zu meinem Bedauern nicht mehr

die Rede sein. Die ganze Last wird

auf mir ruhen.

Wir machten gestern Abends den Spiegel

des Blattes. Ich entwarf den Plan,

Thereupon the gentlemen, who a moment before had still expected too little, changed over to excessive expectations at one bound. Kellner chewed over the idea a bit that I, as the entrepreneur, could very well put my labor into the paper gratis, whereas others would have to put themselves on a paid basis.

After that I begged the gentlemen to enter into a relation of co-ownership with the paper by investing in it either money or labor. None of them wanted to give money; but Kellner promised to contribute his work in return for a share in the profits, and with this I was quite content.

May 15

Kellner has begged off. He must shortly go to England for ten weeks. Accordingly, to my regret, his co-editorship is now out of the question. The whole burden will rest on me.

Last night we drew up the format of the paper.

והנה חיש מהר זינקו האדונים הללו, שאך לפני רגע ציפו אך למעט מאוד, אל עבר ציפיות גדולות מדי. קֶלנֶר גלגל עוד קצת בעיסה ואמר שאני בתור יזם אמנם יכול להשקיע עבודה בעיתון בלי תמורה, ואולם האחרים הרי חייבים לעמוד על כך שיקבלו שכר.

ואז ביקשתי מן האדונים שבכל זאת יראו את עצמם שותפים בעיתון וישקיעו בו או כסף או עבודה. איש לא היה מוכן לתת כסף, ואולם קֶלנֶר הבטיח לתרום את עבודתו תמורת שותפות ברווחים, וזה השביע את רצוני מאוד.

15 במאי [1897]

קֶלנֶר ביטל את השתתפותו. עליו לצאת בקרוב לאנגליה לעשרה שבועות. לפיכך לצערי אין לדבר עליו עוד כעל עורך־שותף. כל הנטל יהיה עלי.

אמש עשינו את המתכונת של העיתון.
