This is a step on the road toward setting in motion the influence of the Jewish press for the benefit of Turkey. We shall continue, provided our efforts are encouraged by sympathy accorded to the Jewish cause.

An effort which I made in accordance with your suggestion to come to the aid of the wounded soldiers came too late—I don’t want to say “unfortunately.” For the victories of the Turkish arms have rather quickly made this subscription pointless. Since the political situation in England and in France did not permit the Jews of those countries to express their sympathies—which really exist—to the Turks in this situation, we have had to confine ourselves to establishing committees in Germany, Austria, and Hungary, and asking our friends in other countries to give their aid in whatever way was possible.

זה צעד ראשון בתהליך הטייתה של העיתונות היהודית לטובתה של טורקיה. נמשיך בכך אם יעודדו את מאמצינו על־ידי הטיית חסד כלפי העניין היהודי.

ניסיון שעשיתי על־פי הצעותיך להושיט סעד לפצועים הטורקים, נעשה — אינני רוצה לומר לצערנו — באיחור. שהרי הנצחונות של הצבאות הטורקיים הפכו עד מהרה את המגבית שהתחלנו בה לעניין מיותר. בגלל המצב הפוליטי באנגליה ובצרפת לא אִפשרו הנסיבות ליהודים בארצות אלה להביע את רגשות אהדתם לטורקים — רגשות שאכן קיימים. לכן נאלצנו להצטמצם בהקמת ועדים בגרמניה, באוסטריה ובהונגריה, וּמידידינו בארצות אחרות ביקשנו להרים את תרומתם בכל דרך שאפשר.
