Da die Möglichkeit vorhanden ist, dass

die Franzosen im Falle der Ablehnung — auch

der Annahme — ihm späterhin vorwerfen

könnten, er habe nicht als uneigennütziger

Gelehrter, sondern als commerçant juif

gehandelt, rieth ich ihm, seiner münd=

lichen Eröffnung auch gleich eine schrift=

liche an Duclaux hinzuzufügen, worin er sagt,

dass er darum auch Geld haben wolle, weil

die (xx) reichen Juden nichts für (xx) unser Volk

thun u. er Mittel haben wolle wünsche,

die er zum guten Zweck verwenden könne.

Diesmal ni comme on le craint.

Etwas bänglich fuhr ich gestern Abends zur

Bahn, um Frau v. Newlinski u. den Sarg

zu erwarten.

Auf dem Bahnhof eine eigenthümliche

Gesellschaft. Mit mir war Oskar Marmorek

gefahren. Draussen war schon arme

Verwandtschaft. Dann kam Resmy Bey

An odd assortment of people at the station. Oscar Marmorek had come with me. Some poor relations were already there.

והיות שאפשר שהצרפתים יטענו נגדו בעתיד – במקרה שיסרבו, אך גם במקרה שיסכימו – שלא פעל כמדען שונא בצע אלא כ־commerçant juif (סוחר יהודי), יעצתי לו להוסיף מיד להצעתו בעל־פה גם הצעה בכתב אל דיקלוֹ, ובה יאמר שהוא מבקש כסף משום שהיהודים העשירים אינם עושים דבר למען עמנו, והוא רוצה שיהיו לו אמצעים שיוכל להשתמש בהם למען המטרה הטובה הזאת.

(הדברים אינם קורים לא כדרך שחוששים שיקרו ולא כדרך שמקווים שיקרו). הפעם – ni comme on le craint (לא כדרך שחוששים).

במידה של חרדה נסעתי אמש לתחנת הרכבת כדי להמתין לגברת נֶוולינסקי ולארון.

בתחנת הרכבת חבורה משונה. אלי התלווה אוסקר מַרמוֹרֶק. בחוץ כבר עמדו קרובי משפחה עניים.
