Haag 30 Sept[em]b[e]r [1898]

Wieder durch die duftende

holländische Landschaft gefahren.

Aber anders als einst. 1885 war

ich ein inhaltsloser junger Träumer,

der nur die Form der Dinge sah.

Heute sagt mir das Land

anderes.

Ich sehe plötzlich eine Stadt

aus der Ebene aufsteigen, ohne

Berg, Fluss oder Meer, sozusagen

ohne Veranlassung. Das ist Haag.

Ein Beweis, dass der Wille

die Städte erhebt.

Wenn ich mit dem Finger

auf einen Punkt zeige: hier soll

eine Stadt sein! so entsteht

da eine Stadt.

Ganz Holland ist ein Beweis

dafür, was der Mensch aus

dem undankbarsten Boden

ziehen kann.

Als verliebter Jüngling

sieht man unter jedem

The Hague, September 30

Traveled again through the fragrant Dutch countryside. But not as I once did. In 1885 I was a callow dreamer who saw only the surface of things.

Today the country has a different message for me.

I see a city suddenly rising from the plain, without mountain, river, or sea—without motive, so to speak. This is The Hague.

A proof that will-power makes cities rise.

If I point my finger at a spot, and say: here shall be a city—a city will come into being there.

All Holland is a proof of what men can extract from the most unfavorable soil.

A young man in love sees his beloved under every woman’s hat.

האג, 30 בספטמבר [1898]

שוב נסעתי דרך השדות מדיפי הבושם של הולנד. אלא שהפעם הדברים שונים מבעבר. ב־1885 הייתי בעל־חלומות צעיר ריק מתוכן שהבחין רק בצורתם החיצונית של הדברים.

היום הארץ אומרת לי משהו אחר.

אני רואה לפתע עיר עולה מן השפלה, בלי הר, בלי נהר, בלי ים, בלי עילה כביכול. זאת האג.

הוכחה שהרצון הוא המעלה ערים.

אם אצביע על נקודה כלשהי ואומר: כאן תהיה עיר! וְתקום כאן עיר.

הולנד כולה היא הוכחה למה שהאדם יכול להעלות מתוך קרקע סרבנית.

צעיר מאוהב, בכל אישה שנקרית בדרכו הוא רואה את אהובתו.
