Zur Gewissheit wurde die Vermuthung,

als ich den kleinen Brief Eulenburgs

erhielt, die Beichaise zum grossen

Brief. Ich fuhr sofort nach dem

deutschen Consulat, wo man mich

ohne morgue officielle em=

pfing. Der Secretär sagte mir,

man erwarte mich schon seit

gestern. Ob ich mich aber legi=

timiren könne. „Denn das kann uns

den Hals kosten.“ Ich legitimirte

mich mehr psychologisch als

kartographisch, da ich keinerlei

Papiere mithatte. Mein Pass war

im Haag.

Ich flösste

ihnen Vertrauen

zu meiner

Identität ein.

Der Viceonsul war

noch liebenswürdiger, als er mir

den Brief Eulenburgs aushändigte.

Ich las den Brief im Wagen,

und war davon zunächst wie

betäubt. Das Colossale was da

erreicht war, berührte mich

zunächst unangenehm. Ich sah

gleich die schweren Consequenzen,

die das für mich bei der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse]

The surmise became a certainty when I received Eulenburg’s note, the coda to his long letter. I immediately drove to the German Consulate, where I was received without the morgue officielle [official arrogance]. The secretary told me that I had been expected since yesterday. However, could I prove my identity? “Because that could cost us our necks.” I established my identity in more of a psychological than a documentary fashion, since I had no papers of any kind on me. My passport was at The Hague. I persuaded them of my identity. The Vice-Consul was even more amiable when he handed me Eulenburg’s letter.

I read the letter in the carriage, and at first was almost dazed by it. The colossal achievement which it represented at first had an unpleasant effect on me. I saw at once the grave consequences which this can have for me at the N. Fr. Pr.

ההשערה היתה לוודאות כשקיבלתי את המכתב הקטן של אוֹילֶנבּוּרג, איגרת הלוואי למכתב הגדול. נסעתי מיד אל הקונסוליה הגרמנית, ונתקבלתי שם בלי morgue officielle (יוהרה של רשמיות). המזכיר אמר לי שמצפים לי כבר מאתמול. האוכל להזדהות? "שהרי זה עלול לעלות לנו בראשינו". הזדהיתי, יותר פסיכולוגית מאשר במסמכים, כי לא היו אתי שום תעודות. הפספורט שלי היה בדֶן האג. הם האמינו לי. סגן־הקונסול היה אף חביב יותר כשמסר לי את מכתבו של אוֹילֶנבּוּרג.

קראתי את המכתב בכרכרה והייתי המום. הדבר העצום שהושג הסב לי בתחילה הרגשה לא־נעימה. מיד ראיתי אילו תוצאות קשות עלולות להיות לזה בשבילי ב־.N.Fr.Pr.
