„Wegen des Artikels in der Reichswehr?“

fragte ich.

„Nein, ich habe den Artikel erst

heute gelesen, er hat mich nicht genirt. (xx)

Aber schon als ich das Inserat in unserer

Pfingstnummer sah war ich wüthend. Es

hätte gar nicht ins Blatt kommen dürfen.

Es ist die Liste unserer Mitarbeiter.“

Ich zuckte die Achseln u. ging im Zimmer

auf u. ab.

Er wischte sich das Gesicht ab: „Sie haben

uns in eine Verlegenheit gebracht.“

Ich sagte mit lauter Stimme: „Der

Artikel in der Reichswehr strotzt von

den gemeinsten Lügen.“

Dann kam Goldbaum ins Zimmer

- ich glaube, er hatte gelauscht — u.

das Gespräch wurde abgebrochen. Wir

redeten Gleichgiltiges.

9 Juni [1897]

Zweiter Gang. Benedikt fing heute

He answered: “That is very unwelcome to us.”

“On account of the article in the Reichswehr?” I asked.

“No, I only read the article today; it didn’t bother me. But I was furious when I saw the advertisement in our Pentecost number. It shouldn’t even have got into the paper. It is the list of our contributors.”

I shrugged my shoulders and walked up and down the room. He wiped his face. “You put us in an embarrassing position.” I said in a loud voice: “The article in the Reichswehr is full of the dirtiest lies.”

At that point Goldbaum came into the room—I think he had been eavesdropping—and the conversation was broken off. We talked about commonplace things.

June 9

Second round. Today at noon Benedikt started in again:

הוא ענה: "זה מאוד לא־נעים לנו".

״בגלל המאמר ב־Reichswehr?" שאלתי.

"לא. את המאמר קראתי רק היום, הוא לא הטריד אותי. אבל ברגע שראיתי את המודעה בגליון שבועות שלנו כבר הייתי נזעם. אסור היה שתיכנס כלל לעיתון. הרי זו רשימה של שמות כל המשתתפים הקבועים שלנו".

אני משכתי בכתפי והתהלכתי בחדר אנה ואנה.

הוא ניגב את פניו: "גרמת לנו מבוכה".

אני אמרתי בקול רם: ״המאמר ב־Reichswehr מלא וגדוש שקרים נבזיים ביותר". ואז נכנס גוֹלדבּלוּם לחדר — דומני שצותת לנו מאחורי הדלת — והשיחה נקטעה. דיברנו על עניינים של מה בכך.
