Wie sich in Cypern die Griechen

gegen die Juden wehren würden,

so wären sich ja die Australier

gegen die indische Einwanderung.

Sie fürchten überschwemmt zu

werden. Und gegen den Willen

der Angesessenen könne er

in seinem Amte nichts thun.

„Bei uns ist Alles öffentlich,

u. wenn von Cypern so die

Rede wäre, ginge gleich der

Sturm los.“

Worauf ich entgegnete, dass

Perhaps there would be restrictive legislation if Jewish immigration were intensified—this evidently was a hint to me, the gypsy chieftain, to call off my hordes—but the race question did not enter into it; it was solely a trades-union question).

Just as the Greeks would resist the Jews in Cyprus, the Australians were now opposing Indian immigration. They are afraid of being swamped. And in his office he couldn’t do anything against the will of the indigenous population.

(אני רושם כאן את דבריו לא בדיוק לפי סדר אמירתם, אלא כפי שהם עולים בזכרוני. הוא הכחיש שיש אנטישמיות באנגליה. אם תגבר הגירת יהודים, אולי, כך אמר, יחוקקו חוקים נגדה – כאן מן הסתם היה רמז בשבילי, ראש שבטי הצוענים, שארמוז להמונים שלא לבוא – אבל אין זו שאלה של גזע, אלא רק של איגוד מקצועי.)

כפי שהיוונים צפויים להתנגד לַיהודים, כך הרי מתנגדים האוסטרלים להגירת ההוֹדים. הם פוחדים מהצפה. והרי בתפקידו אין הוא יכול לעשות דבר המנוגד לרצון התושבים.
