Ich wurde in Ibrahims mir nun schon wohlbekanntes Cabinet geführt Die beiden Unterceremonienmeister Ghalib u. Memduh Bey leisteten mir liebens= würdig u. schweigsam Gesellschaft. Die halbe Stunde bis zum Eintreffen Ibrahims, der sofort von meiner Ankunft verständigt worden war, verging ziemlich schwer. Dann kam Ibrahim, u. zw. vom Sultan, der mir sagen Hess, er fühle Sich heute vom Selamlik zu ermüdet, um mich sogleich zu empfangen. Ich möge morgen (xx) (d. i. heute) Vormittag ins Palais kommen. Wir verabredeten, dass ich um 11 Uhr da sein solle. Ibrahim bemerkte, S[eine] M[ajestät] habe mir „quelques iradés impériaux et peut-être des propositions à communiquer“. Ich verneigte mich stumm. Hierauf theilte mir Ibrahim weiters mit,

I had already changed my clothes on board, to be sure; but by the time we got to the Palace it was half-past three.

 

I was taken to Ibrahim's office, by now familiar to me. The two Assistant Masters of Ceremonies, Ghalib and Memduh Bey, kept me company, amiably and silently. The half-hour until the arrival of Ibrahim, who had immediately been notified of my arrival, passed rather slowly.

 

Then Ibrahim came, and from the Sultan, who sent me word that the selamlik had made him too tired to receive me immediately. I was to come to the Palace tomorrow morning (i.e., today). We arranged that I was to be there at 11 o’clock. Ibrahim remarked that H.M. had “quelques iradés impériaux et peut-être des propositions à communiquer [some Imperial decrees and maybe some propositions to communicate] to me.

 

I bowed silently.

 

Thereupon Ibrahim further informed me that the Sultan asked me to regard myself as his guest during my entire stay here.

 אמנם החלפתי בגדים באונייה, אך עד שהגענו לארמון כבר היתה השעה שלוש וחצי. הוּבלתי אל לשכתו של איבּרָהים, שכבר הכרתיה היטב. שני הסגנים של ראש הטקס, גַאליבּ ומֶמדוּח בֵּיי, אירחו לי לחברה באדיבות ובשתיקה. מחצית השעה עד הגיעו של איבּרָהים, שהודיעו לו מיד על בואי, חלפה בעצלתיים.

ואז בא איבּרָהים. הוא בא מן הסולטאן שביקש להודיע לי שהוא עייף מן הסֶלאמליק מכדי לקבל אותי מיד. שאבוא מחר (כלומר היום) לפני הצהריים לארמון. קבענו שאבוא בשעה אחת־עשרה. איבּרָהים אמר שהוד רוממותו יש לו "quelques iradés impériaux et peut-être des propositions à communiquer" ("להודיע לי דבר על כמה צווים קיסריים ואולי על הצעות כלשהן").

השתחוויתי בלי לומר דבר.

אחר־כך אמר לי איבּרָהים עוד, שהסולטאן מבקש שכל זמן שהותי כאן אראה עצמי כאורח שלו.

שוב השתחוויתי דוּמם.
