Günstiger schien ihm unsere Sache in

England zu liegen. Er constatirte mit

mir, dass die englische Kirche für

unseren Gedanken sei, wenn sich

auch die englische Politik der Sache

nicht bemächtigt habe — Er hörte es

gern, dass ich mit dem Bischof

von London gesprochen habe.

Wir sprachen dann über Frankreich

u. die gegenwärtige Situation. Er lauschte

aufmerksam meinem Bericht, der darin

culminirte, dass Frankreich zu schwach sei,

um sich einem fait accompli zu widersetzen.

Er meinte, dass die Verhältnisse einer

Dictatur zutreiben u. machte mich aufmerk=

sam, dass der jüngere Napoleon, der

Bruder russische General jetzt in Paris

sei. Diesem könne man es zutrauen,

He said: “In Russia one must be prepared for anything. Let me just remind you of how the Germans in the Baltic provinces were treated. In that case persecution was carried quite far—as far as Siberia.”

The situation in England appeared more favorable to him. He agreed with me that the English Church favored our idea, even though English statesmanship had not taken up the matter. He was glad to hear that I had spoken with the Bishop of London.

We then talked about France and her present situation. He listened attentively to my report which culminated in the conclusion that France was too weak to resist a fait accompli.

He remarked that the conditions were moving toward a dictatorship, and called my attention to the fact that the younger Napoleon, the Russian general, was in Paris now.

באנגליה נראה לו שמצב ענייננו טוב יותר. הוא היה תמים דעים אתי שהכנסייה האנגלית תומכת ברעיוננו, הגם שהפוליטיקה האנגלית לא נכנסה לעניין; הוא שמע בסיפוק ששוחחתי עם הבּישוֹף של לונדון.

אחר־כך דיברנו על צרפת ועל המצב עכשיו. הוא האזין ברוב קשב לסקירתי, שהסתכמה בכך שצרפת חלשה מכדי לגלות התנגדות ל־fait accompli (עובדה מוגמרת).

הוא אמר שהמצב שם מקרב את הדיקטטורה והפנה את תשומת־לבי שנפוליאון הצעיר יותר, הגנרל הרוסי, נמצא עכשיו בפאריס.
