Der Aufgang elegant, aber nicht grossartig. Die Athemnoth der Höhenbe= steigung überwand ich (xx) im Zimmer der Adjutanten. Ein General u. ein Hauptmann, die sich vorstellten, waren sehr nett. Wir conversirten ange= regt — italienisch, so weit meine Mittel reichten. Fünf Minuten nach Viertel Zwölf kam ein Mönch, der die Kardinalskappe aufhatte, aus dem Zimmer des Königs. Gleich darauf wurde ich vor= gerufen. Der Hauptmann ging voraus, rief meinen Namen zur Thür hinein — ich glaube, er öffnete beide Flügel.

At 11  I drew up before the King’s wing of the Quirinal.

 

The staircase elegant, but not magnificent.

 

I caught my breath after the long climb in the adjutant’s room. A general and a captain introduced themselves to me and were very nice. We had an animated conversation—in Italian, to the extent of my knowledge of it.

 

At twenty past eleven a monk wearing a cardinal’s cap came out of the King’s room.

 

Right after that I was called in. The captain went ahead of me and called out my name through the doorway—I believe he opened both wings of the door.

 והקרקע תינתן (בחינם?) רק למי שיתחייב לבנות בסגנון שהוקצה לחלק שיינתן לו. בשעה 11 הגעתי במרכבתי לארמון קווירינאל, אל האגף של המלך.

המדרגות אלגנטיות, אך לא מפוארות.

מקוצר הנשימה של העלייה במדרגות התאוששתי בחדר השלישים. גנרל אחד וסרן אחד הציגו את עצמם והיו נחמדים מאוד. שוחחנו שיחה ערה באיטלקית, כמיטב ידיעותי. חמש דקות אחרי אחת עשרה ורבע יצא מחדרו של המלך נזיר חבוש כובע של קרדינלים. מיד אחר־כך קראו לי לבוא. הסרן הלך לפנַי, קרא את שמי מבעד לדלת – דומני שפתח את שתי כנפיה.
