Je pars demain samedi soir et je

pour quelqes entre deux trains à Wilna, pour

y faire un discours. On me dit,

hostiles contre moi, mais cela

ne m’effraye pas, (xx)

- s’il y en a — dans la bonne voie, que j’y vais.

Je crois que cela répond aux besoins

de la situation, mais tout de même

je serais très heureux d’apprendre

herewith is a first proof of them. I beg Y.E. to read it, have one of your men put it in a mail box tomorrow, and to forget that I have revealed this part of my correspondence.

I intend to work at the task of reconciliation with all my resources, even before the Congress.

I am leaving tomorrow, Saturday evening, and I plan to stop on Sunday at Vilna, between two trains, in order to make a speech there. I am told that some demonstrations hostile to me may take place there, but this does not frighten me; in fact, the very reason I am going there is to straighten out misguided people, if there are any there.

I believe that this will meet the needs of the situation, but just the same I would be very happy to know if there is no inconvenience.

המצורף כאן הוא הוכחה ראשונה לכך. אני מבקשך, הוד מעלתך, שתקרא אותו, שתורה לאחד מאנשיך שישלשל אותו מחר לתיבת דואר, ושתשכח שגיליתי לך את הזווית הזאת של התכתבותי.

שמתי לי למטרה לפעול בכל האמצעים במעשה הפיוס, אף לפני הקונגרס. אני יוצא מחר, שבת בערב, ואני מתכוון לעצור ביום א׳ בווילנה, בין שתי רכבות, כדי לשאת שם נאום. אומרים לי שייתכן שיהיו שם כמה הפגנות נגדי, אך הן אינן מפחידות אותי, והריני הולך דווקא לשם כדי להחזיר אובדי דרך – אם יש שם כאלה – אל הנתיב הנכון.

אני מאמין שדבר זה עונה לצורכי המצב, אך עם זאת אשמח לדעת אם אין בכך משום מעשה לא־רצוי.
