Zeit lustig. Ich sagte: „Davon kann ja keine Rede sein, da ich nur mit Zustimmung des Sultans nach Palästina will.“ Er sah mich lustig vergnügt an, als ob er sagen wollte: „Das möge dir der Sultan glauben.“ Aber laut sagte er: „Beruhigen Sie Lord Lans= downe darüber, dass Sie keinen Jameson = Raid von El Arisch nach Palästina Vorhaben.“ „Ich werde ihn beruhigen, M[iste]r Chamberlain!“ sagte ich ebenfalls lachend. Wir schüttelten uns die Hände u. ich sagte ihm zum Abschied, dass ich glücklich war, ihn kennen gelernt zu haben.   Um 1 Uhr 45 war ich in New Court bei Rothschild

I said:

 

“Of course there can be no question of that, for I intend to go to Palestine only with the Sultan’s consent.”

 

He gave me an amused look, as if to say:

 

“Go tell that to the Sultan.”

 

But aloud he said to me:

 

"Reassure Lord Lansdowne that you are not planning a Jameson -Raid from El Arish into Palestine."

 

"I shall set his mind at rest, Mr. Chamberlain!" I said, also smiling.

 

We shook hands, and on parting I told him that I was happy to have made his acquaintance.

אני אמרתי:

"זה כמובן לא בא בחשבון כלל, שהרי אלך לארץ־ישראל רק בהסכמתו של הסולטאן". הוא הביט בי בהנאה, כמו ביקש לומר: "יאמין הסולטאן במה שאמרת". אבל בקולו אמר: ״[אני מבקש] שתרגיע את הלורד לֶנסדאוּן שאין אתה מתכוון ל־Jameson-Raid מאל־עריש לפלשׂתינה".

"ארגיע אותו, מיסטר צֶ׳מבֶּרליין!" אמרתי, וגם אני צחקתי.

לחצנו ידיים, וכשנפרדתי ממנו אמרתי לו שאני מאושר שהכרתי אותו.
