Da ich keine Absicht habe, ihn

zu betrügen, kann es mir auch

so recht sein. Ich insistirte

nur (xx) puncto Intervention,

denn ein so günstiger Moment

kehre nicht alle Tage oder

Jahre wieder.

Wir sprachen auch von

Witte. Ich wollte ihm Wittes

Reserven sagen, aber er war

schon au courant.

However, he said that he could not do it at the moment, because just before receiving me he had had his farewell audience with the Czar who is starting out on a trip today

But when I discreetly inquired about my present chances of obtaining an audience with the Czar, he said: “We shall see— after the Congress."

This proves again that what happens at the Congress is especially important to him.

Since I have no intention of deceiving him, that is all right with me too. I insisted only as far as intercession was concerned, for, I said, such an auspicious moment doesn’t turn up every day, or year.

We also talked about Witte. I wanted to tell him about Witte’s reservations; but he was already au courant [informed]:

“The Minister of Finance is skeptical about the realization of your projects. He doesn’t believe in them.”

ואולם לא יוכל לעשות זאת מיד, כי לפני שקיבל אותי היה בראיון פרֵדה אצל הקיסר היוצא היום למסע.

ואולם כשנגעתי בזהירות בשאלה כיצד עומד עכשיו עניין הריאיון אצל הקיסר, אמר:

״Nous verrons – après le Congrès״ (״נראה – אחרי הקונגרס").

בכך הוכח שוב שמהלך הקונגרס חשוב לו ביותר. היות שאין לי כוונה לרמותו, אוכל לקבל גם את זאת. רק לחצתי בעניין ההתערבות [אצל הסולטאן], כי שעת כושר כזאת איננה חוזרת בכל יום או בכל שנה.

גם על ויטֶה שוחחנו. רציתי לומר לו מה הסתייגויותיו של ויטֶה, אך הוא היה מעודכן.
