Cylinder den kaiserlichen Berg hinauf. Ibrahim begrüsste mich süss. Die Kost habe mir wol nicht geschmeckt. Aber ich verwies auf den Brief, den ich in

Today came the decision, short and sharp like a last shot.

 

When I arrived outside Beshiktash at noon, I immediately sent Wellisch up with my letter to the Sultan.

 

He had not been gone long and I was just about to have our “Konstantinos" steam off and to lie down for an afternoon nap when I caught sight of Ibrahim’s servant on the gangway. Wellisch, too, came back, saying that I should come to the Palace immediately.

 

Cursing, I changed my clothes in the cabin in the depths, and again drove up the Imperial Mountain in my heavy black frock-coat, overcoat, and top hat.

 

Ibrahim greeted me sweetly, saying that presumably I hadn't liked the food.

בצהריים, עם הגיעי לחוף בֶּשיקטאש, שיגרתי מיד את מכתבי בידי וֶליש אל הסולטאן.

 לא חלף זמן רב, וברגע שרציתי להורות לַ״קוֹנסטנטינוֹס" שלי להפליג ונשכבתי לתנומה קלה של אחר־הצהריים, הבחנתי בשַמָּשו של איבּרָהים צועד על הגשרון. גם וֶליש חזר וקרא לי לבוא מיד אל הארמון.

בתא שבמעמקי הסירה החלפתי את בגדי וקיללתי; ושוב אני נוסע במעלה ההר הקיסרי, לבוש במעיל השחור הכבד שלי ועליו מעיל עליון, וחובש את הצילינדר.

איבּרָהים בירך אותי במתק שפתיים ופלט שהוא מניח שהמצב אינו לרוחי.
