Man könne mir dort un mauvais partie machen. Wilna sei der Sitz der „Bund“-Leitung, einer geheimen revolutionären Gesellschaft u. die Leute wären über mich wüthend, 1° weil ich zu Plehwe gekommen sei, 2° weil ich beim Petersburger Bankett gegen sie gesprochen habe.

 I therefore beg to submit a request for the authorization of a branch office, in order to fulfil the above-mentioned condition.

 on the train, between Dvinsk and Vilna

 

My last day in St. Petersburg was somewhat spoiled for me by the Vitebsk member of the A.C., Dr. Bruck. He excitedly counseled me against going to Vilna.

 

He said they could give me un mauvais parti [a bad time] there. Vilna was the seat of the leadership of the “Bund," a secret revolutionary society, and those people were furious at me because I had 1) gone to see Plehwe, 2) spoken against them at the St. Petersburg banquet.

בתא הרכבת בין דווינסק לווילנה. את היום האחרון בפטרסבורג מירר לי במידת מה חבר הוועד־הפועל מוויטֶבּסק, הד"ר בּרוּק. בהתרגשות יעץ לי שלא אבוא לווילנה. אפשר שיעשו לי שם un mauvais parti (צרות). וילנה היא המושב של הנהגת ה״בּוּנד", אגודה חשאית מהפכנית, והאנשים הללו זועמים, 1. משום שהלכתי אל פּלֶוֶה, 2. משום שדיברתי נגדם בבַּנקֶט בפטרסבורג.
