Erklärung der Sache begriffen. Neben ihm saß scheu u[nd] ehrer= bietig ein dünner Griesgram, M[iste]r Herbert Lousada. Die Karte Egyptens lag aufge= schlagen da, Bruder Leopold u[nd] des Lords 2 Söhne horchten respektvoll der Staatsaction. Lord R[othschild] benahm sich pracht= voll. Er vertheidigte meinen Plan wie seinen eigenen. „Dr Herzl and I agree in that u[nd] s[o] w[eiter].“ Der kniffliche Winkelschreiber Lousada machte den schweren Versuch, mit seiner Lord R[othschild] zugekehrten Gesichtshälfte liebenswürdig zu lächeln u[nd] mit der mir zugekehrten eine harte abweisende Miene zu machen. Das Resultat war komisch u[nd] ekelhaft. Als er Lord R[othschild] auf dessen Einladung, die Sache zu überlegen, antwortete:

Next to him there sat, shy and respectful, a skinny grouch, Mr. Herbert Lousada.

 

An unfolded map of Egypt was lying there; brother Leopold and the Lord’s two sons were respectfully listening to the action of state.

 

Lord R. behaved splendidly. He defended my plan as if it were his own. “Dr. Herzl and I agree in that” etc.

 

The tricky yellow journalist Lousada attempted the difficult feat of smiling amiably on the half of his face that was turned to Lord R., and wearing a hard, forbidding expression on the half that was turned toward me. The result was comical and disgusting.

 

When he (Lousada) replied to Lord R.’s invitation to think the matter over,

לידו ישב, ביישני וכנוע איש קפוץ שפתיים ודק גזרה, מיסטר הֶרבֶּרט לוּזאדָה.

 מפת מצרים היתה פרוסה, האח ליאוֹפּוֹלד ושני בניו של הלורד הקשיבו בנימוס למעשה המדיני.

הלורד רוטשילד התנהג למופת. הוא הגן על תוכניתי כאילו היתה שלו. 

".Dr Herzl and I agree in that u.s.w" ("הד״ר הרצל ואני מסכימים בעניין זה וכו׳").

הלבלר המתפלפל לוּזאדָה עשה ניסיון נואש להעלות חיוך חביב על מחצית פניו המופנית אל הלורד רוטשילד, ואילו על המחצית המופנית אלי – העוויה האומרת שלילה. התוצאה היתה מגוחכת ומגעילה.

אחרי שענה ללורד רוטשילד, בתשובה לפנייתו לשקול בעניין:
