Gestern Vormittags traf also der Unterhändler

Crespi in Begleitung des Generalconsuls

v[on] Dirsztay bei mir ein. Crespi macht

keinen schlechten Eindruck. Magerer wachs=

gelber schwarzbärtiger Levantiner, Aussehen

eines zweit oder drittclassigen Diplomaten.

Die Cravate über dem weissen Gilet zu

grell, die Rosette im Salonrock zu an=

spruchsvoll. Aber er nennt eine Katze

eine Katze u. spricht offen über das

regierende Personal in Constantinopel.

Er fragte mich, ob ich die Depesche

schon bekommen habe. Er meint nämlich,

dass sie zwischen gestern u. heute kommen

sollte: die Berufung zum Sultan.

Nur dürfe ich beim Empfang nicht

Zionismus reden. Ich dürfe nur

meine guten Dienste anbieten für die

Vermittlung des Vorschusses. Denn um

einen Vorschuss u. keine Anleihe handle

Yesterday morning, then, the Turkish agent Crespi arrived at my place in company with von Dirsztay, the Consul-General. Crespi doesn’t make a bad impression. A skinny, wax-yellow, black- bearded Levantine. Appearance of a second- or third-rate diplomat, the necktie over the white vest too loud, the rosette in the morning coat too pretentious. But he calls a spade a spade and speaks frankly about the people in power in Constantinople. He asked me whether I had received the telegram yet. For he thinks that it should have come either yesterday or today:

the summons to the Sultan.

But, he said, I must not speak about Zionism at the reception. I may only offer my services to procure an advance. Because it was a matter of an advance and not a loan.

אתמול לפני הצהריים הגיעו אלי אפוא המתווך קרֶספִּי בליווי הקונסול הכללי פוֹן דירסטאי. קרֶספִּי איננו עושה רושם רע. לוונטיני צנום, פניו צהובות כשעווה, זקן שחור, מראהו כשל דיפלומט מדרגה שנייה או שלישית. העניבה שמעל לווסט הלבן בוהקת מדי, הרוֹזֶטָה במקטורן יומרנית מדי. אך הוא קורא לנער בשמו ומדבר גלויות על אנשי המנגנון השולטים בקושטא. הוא שאל אותי אם קיבלתי את הטלגרמה. להערכתו, היתה צריכה להגיע אתמול או היום:

הקריאה לבוא אל הסולטאן.

אלא שבשעת הפגישה אל לי לומר דבר על הציונות. כל שעלי לעשות הוא להציע את שירותי הטובים לתיווך המִקדמה. כי מדובר במִקדמה ולא בהלוואה.
