von der Polizei zurückgehaltene zerstreute Menge immer wieder sammelte. Die Polizei liess mir auch sagen, ich möge in der Stadt nicht herumfahren. Gegen Abend fuhren wir dann nach Werki, eine Stunde von der Stadt, wo Juden sonst nicht wohnen dürfen. Dort hat unser Freund Ben Jacob per nefas ein Sommerhäuschen gemiethet, u. bei den Verkehrsverhältnissen dieser russischen Provinzstadt ist das weit abgelegen. Hierher hatte er etwa 50 Gäste eingeladen. Ghetto mit guten Ghettogesprächen. Die Tafel war dabei prächtig. Sie wollten mir Liebes, was sie konnten thun. Und der Hausherr hielt unter vielen Toasten der Anderen eine schöne stattliche Hausherrnrede von wirklicher

 in front of which crowds kept re-gathering as fast as the police dispersed them.

The police also sent me a message that I should not drive about in the city.

 

Towards evening we drove to Verki, an hour’s distance from the city, where Jews are ordinarily not allowed to reside. There our friend Ben Jacob had per nefas [illegally] rented a little summer house, and, considering the transportation situation in this Russian provincial town, it was far away.

 

To this house he had invited about 50 guests. Ghetto, with good ghetto-talk. But the dinner that went with it was sumptuous. They wanted to show me every kindness they could. And the host, among the many toasts of the others, made a fine, stately speech of welcome, one of real old-Jewish nobility.

לפני המלון התקהל ברחוב המון, ואף כי המשטרה פיזרה אותו, חזר והתקהל וחזר חלילה.

המשטרה אף שלחה להודיע שאל לי לסייר ברחובות העיר.

לקראת ערב נסענו לוֶרקי, מרחק שעה מן העיר, שנאסר על היהודים להתגורר בה. במקום הזה שכר ידידנו בן יעקב per nefas (בניגוד לחוק) בית קיט קטן, ובתנאי התחבורה בעיר הפרובינציה הרוסית הזאת, זה נחשב מקום מרוחק מאוד.

לכאן הזמין כחמישים אורחים. גטו עם שיחות־גטו טובות. אך הסעודה היתה מפוארת. הם רצו לגרום לי נחת, ככל יכולתם. בין שאר ברכות, נשא המארח נאום של בעל־בית, ממש דברי אצילות יהודית עתיקת ימים.
