Der Finanzminister habe ihm, Crespi,

geklagt, dass nur 10,000 £ in den Staats=

kassen seien u. davon sollte man für

den Ramazan 150,000 £ ausgeben, ein

paar Wochen später für den Beiram (?)

wieder 130,000. Und Schulden, Beamtengehalte etc.

Das erinnert mich an die Kasse des

Actionscomités.

Pikantes Detail: der hiesige Botschafter

Mahmud Nedim habe Crespi aufgetragen,

er solle ihm seine rückständigen zwölf

Monatsgehaltsraten verschaffen. Wenn man

ihm kein Geld schicke, werde er sein

Amt niederlegen „et il fera du

Chantage.“

Auf die Vorschussfrage telegraphirt Kann

lakonisch: Nein.

“Look for it! What did I make you a minister for? Just dig up the money any place you can.”

The Minister of Finance had complained to him, Crespi, that there was only £10,000 in the treasury, and of this 150,000 was supposed to be spent for the Ramadan, and a few weeks later another 130,000 for the Beiram (?) Plus debts, salaries of officials, etc.

This reminds me of the treasury of the Actions Committee.

Spicy detail: the local ambassador, Mahmud Nedim, is said to have given Crespi the job of getting him his back pay for the past twelve months. If they did not send him any money, he would resign his office, “et il fera du chantage [and he would blackmail them]."

שר האוצר התלונן באוזניו, כלומר באוזני קרֶספִּי, שבקופות המדינה נותרו רק עשרת אלפים לירות טורקיות, ובשביל הרמאדאן צריך להוציא משם 150 אלף; וכעבור כמה שבועות, בשביל חג הבייראם, עוד 130 אלף. ועוד חובות, משכורות וכו'.

זה הזכיר לי את הקופה של הוועד־הפועל.

פרט פיקנטי: השגריר כאן מחמוּד נֶדים הטיל על קרֶספִּי שיסדיר בשבילו את קבלת שתים־עשרה המשכורות האחרונות שחייבים לו. אם לא ישלחו לו כסף, יתפטר "et il fera du chantage" ("ויפעיל סחטנות").
