 and as a matter of fact I do intend to speak with Gutmann when I get to Vienna, although there is something distasteful to me about this. I only hope that all these people are sufficiently aware of my own purity in financial matters.

 

This is a clever move on Lippay's part. Borrowing money from Jews against security is no disgrace. What are Jews for, anyway? The fact that the security isn't worth as much as the loan doesn't do any harm either. Why are Jews such fools?

 

February 4, Vienna

 

Yesterday I went on my errand, certainly a hard one, to Gutmann to raise money for Lippay.

 

I said—without mentioning Lippay—that it was a matter of thirty thousand guilders

 ובאמת, אני רוצה לדבר עם גוּטמן כשאגיע לווינה, אף־על־פי שהדבר יסב לי אי־נעימות. אני רק מקווה שנקיון הכפיים שלי ידוע די הצורך לאנשים האלה.

מצד ליפּאי זו דרך מתוחכמת. קבלת הלוואה מיהודים תמורת משכון אין בה קלון. לשם מה יש יהודים? שהמשכון לא שווה כל־כך הרבה, גם זה לא מזיק. מדוע היהודים טיפשים כל־כך?

אתמול עשיתי את הדרך, הקשה בכל זאת, אל גוּטמַן, כדי להשיג כסף בשביל ליפּאי. אמרתי – בלי להזכיר את ליפּאי – שמדובר ב־30 אלף גוּלדֶן
