Diese kann aber nur 100-150,000 £ her=

leihen, während die Regierung — nach

der ausdrücklichen Erklärung des Grossveziers —

aux abois sei und 2-3 Millionen £ brauche.

Unsere Aussichten stünden demnach günstig.

Levantinern glaube ich nicht.

Therefore I immediately wired Crespi:

An interesting letter came from Crespi yesterday—se non é vero é ben trovato [if it is not true, it is well invented]—telling about his discussions with the Grand Vizier and Tahsin Bey as well as about the intrigues of the Ottoman Bank. The latter, however, can lend only £100-150,000, while the government—according to the Grand Vizier’s express declaration—is aux abois [in desper-ate straits] and needs 2-3 million pounds. Accordingly, he says, our prospects are favorable.

From Wolffsohn a report about his conversation with the ambassador at Berlin. Ahmed Tewfik told him amicably what he had told me two years ago:

מוולפסון נתקבל דיווח על שיחתו עם השגריר בברלין. אחמֶד טוּפיק אמר לו בידידות את מה שכבר אמר לי לפני שנתיים:
