Your Excellency:

First of all, please accept my very sincere thanks for your great and enduring kindness.

Not having seen anything come, I already had some suspicion that our affairs were going badly.

It is probably hard to hunt several rabbits at once, even in Turkey. The proposed intervention now certainly has a humanitarian character that everyone ought to recognize, and then it would be a rare case when one good act can only be performed at the expense of the other.

But one might object:

1) that since you are at it, you could perfectly well solve both questions at once, killing two birds with one stone;

2) that action in favor of Zionism

ראשית לכול, קבל־נא את תודתי הכנה על שפע הטוב המתמיד שאתה מעניק לי.

בראותי שדבר אינו מגיע [מפטרסבורג או מקושטא], כבר התעוררו בי מעט חשדות שמהלך עניינינו בכי רע. מן הסתם, אפילו בטורקיה קשה לצוד הרבה ארנבות בבת אחת. ההתערבות שהוחל בה עכשיו אוֹפיָהּ, בלי ספק, הומניטרי, והעולם כולו צריך להכיר בה; ועלול לקרות דבר, הקורה רק לעתים רחוקות, שמעשה טוב אחד יבוא על חשבון מעשה טוב אחר. ואולם כנגד זה אפשר לטעון:

1. שהיות שכבר עוסקים בכך, אפשר להסדיר במכה אחת את שתי השאלות [מקדוניה וארץ־ישראל] על הצד הטוב ביותר;

2. שהעשייה למען הציונות
