ist eine höchst charakteristische Bewegung. Er

blickt Einen voll u. stark an — der Kaiser! — u.

wenn ihm eine Bemerkung oder Wendung

zusagt, sagen bei zusammengepresstem Mund seine

herrlichen Augen: Ich hab’ dich verstanden — du

bist mein Mann — das ist mir ganz recht.

Es existiren unzählige Bilder von ihm, aber da

dieser nickende Blick, eine ganz eigene, mächtige

Art von Blinzeln nicht gemalt werden kann,

weiss man nicht, wie seine Augen sind.

Er bemächtigte sich bald des Gesprächs u.

erklärte mir, warum ihm die zionistische

Bewegung Zusage. Leider war ich ein befangener

Zuhörer u. musste auch meine ganze Kraft zur

Vorbereitung der Riposten zusammennehmen,

so dass mir nicht alle Details geblieben sind.

Er sprach von den Juden immer als von meinen

„Landsleuten“ in einem nicht gerade freund=

lichen Ton. Er zweifle nicht, dass es uns bei

den Geldmitteln u. Menschenkräften über die wir verfügen gelingen

werde, die Colonisirung Palästinas durchzu=

But when I had propounded the matter of the land company and the German protectorate, the Kaiser nodded quickly and contentedly, as is his wont—more with his eyes than with his head. He soon took over the conversation and explained to me why the Zionist movement appealed to him. Unfortunately I was a preoccupied listener and, besides, had to concentrate all my energies on preparing my replies, so that not all the details have stuck in my mind. He always referred to the Jews as “your people”—and in a tone that was not exactly friendly. He did not doubt that with the financial and human resources at our disposal we would succeed in carrying out the colonization of Palestine.

ואולם כשהעליתי את עניין חברת הקרקעות והפּרוֹטֶקטוֹרַט הגרמני, נענע בראשו בקצב, בהבעה של שביעות רצון, כהרגלו מניע את עיניו יותר מאשר את ראשו. זו תנועה אופיינית ביותר שלו. הוא מסתכל בך מלוא עיניו ובחוזקה – הקיסר! – וכשהערה או פנייה נראית לו, אומרות עיניו הנהדרות, כשפיו קפוץ: הבנתי אותך – אתה איש כלבבי – זה מוצא חן בעינַי.

יש אין־ספור תמונות שלו, אבל היות שאי־אפשר לצייר את המבט המהנהן הזה, דרך ייחודית ותקיפה של מצמוץ, אין יודעים עיניו מָהֵן.

חיש־מהר השתלט על השיחה והצהיר לפנַי מדוע התנועה הציונית נראית לו. לצערי הייתי בבחינת שומע משוחד, ואנוס הייתי לגייס את כל כוחי להכנת התשובות, וכך לא נותרו בזכרוני כל הפרטים. תמיד דיבר על היהודים כעל "בני־עמך", ולא בטון ידידותי דווקא. אין הוא מטיל ספק שהודות לאמצעים הכספיים ומשאבי־האנוש העומדים לרשותנו, נצליח להוציא אל הפועל את יישובה של ארץ־ישראל.
