Sir Thomas empfahl uns, uns an Sir Benjamin Baker den Erbauer der Firth of Forth Brücke u[nd] des Assuan Damms zu wenden. In die Details des Charters wollte er nicht eingehen. Das müssten wir mit Lord Cromer abmachen. So weit

A lean, sharp, intelligent, suspicious old man who reminds me of Freycinet. We spoke about this and that, not much that was new. But when I mentioned the colonial rights which were to be established for the settlement, he got frightened. We must not think of anything international—at the most, a Charter from the Egyptian government.

 

The strange thing is that while the whole world believes in England’s determination to hold on to Egypt coûte que coûte [at any cost], Sir Thomas gave me the feeling that they don’t consider themselves so firmly in the saddle and regard the situation as provisional.

 

I gave him the itinerary of the Commission and its membership. I said we still needed an irrigation engineer. Sir Thomas recommended that we contact Sir Benjamin Baker, the builder of the Firth of Forth bridge and the Aswan Dam.

He didn’t want to go into the details of the Charter. We would have to arrange that with Lord Cromer.

זקן צנום, חד־לשון, חכם, חשדן. הוא מזכיר לי את פרֶיסינֶה. דיברנו על כל מיני דברים, לא דברים שיש בהם משום חדש. ואולם כשדיברתי על הזכויות הקולוניאליות שיש לקבוע בשביל ההתיישבות, נבהל. אל לנו להביא בחשבון שוב דבר בין־לאומי – לכל היותר צ׳רטר מממשלת מצרים.

מופלא הוא שבכל העולם מאמינים בנחישותה של אנגליה להחזיק במצרים coûte que coûte (בכל מחיר), ואילו מתוך דבריו של סֶר תוֹמאס חשתי שאין הם סבורים שהם יושבים שם ישיבת בטח אלא רואים בה עניין של ארעי.

נתתי לו את המסלול של המשלחת ואת הרכבה. עדיין אנו זקוקים למומחה להשקיה. סֶר תומאס הציע שנפנה אל סֶר בנג׳מין בּייקֶר, בונה הגשר על Firth of Forth וסכר אסואן.

לפרטים על הצ׳רטר לא רצה להיכנס. את אלה עלינו לסכם עם הלורד קרוֹמֶר.
