Meinung, aber bald wurde vollständig klar,

dass Dreyfus unschuldig ist! Es war etwas

ganz Colossales.

„Was sind das für Leute“, rief der

Kaiser. „Halten die mich wirklich für einen

so verrückten Kerl, dass ich solche Briefe

an den Erstbesten schriebe? Hanotaux hat

27,000 francs auf den Tisch des Hauses

für diese Falsificate niedergelegt. Man

hat sie ihm angeboten, und er, der Richelieu,

der grosse Staatsmann hat sie für echt

gehalten — oder gethan, als ob er sie

für echt hielte. ’s ist ja unglaublich! Die

Sache kam durch die Prinzessin Mathilde

auf. In ihrem Salon sagte Hanotaux

vor versammeltem Kriegsvolk, dass er Briefe

von mir in Händen habe. Die sah natür=

lich sofort ein, dass es etwas Unmögliches war,

u. hat es ihm zu verstehen gegeben.“

Hier ist meine Erinnerung unsicher.

Wenn ich nicht irre, sagte der Kaiser: „Sie

hat ihn daraufhin ’rausgeschmissen.“ Jeden=

At this point my recollection is uncertain. If I am not mistaken, the Kaiser said: “And then she bounced him out."

דיבר עליה בחופשיות מלאה – קצת לתמהונו של בּילוֹב, דומני. לא הבעתי שום דעה, אולם מיד התברר לחלוטין שדרייפוס חף מפשע! זה היה אדיר.

"איזה מין אנשים אלה", קרא הקיסר. "האם הם באמת חושבים שאני מטורף עד כדי כך שאכתוב מכתבים כאלה למישהו? אַנוֹטוּ שילם ללא היסוס 27,000 פרנקים בשביל הזיופים הללו. הציעו לו אותם, והוא, הרישֶלייה, המדינאי הגדול, חשב שהם אמִתיים – או שהעמיד פנים שהוא חושב שהם אמִתיים. הרי זה לא ייאמן! העניין עלה באמצעות הנסיכה מתילדה.

בסַלון שלה אמר אַנוֹטוֹ, לפני הקהל שם, שיש בידיו מכתבים שלי. היא מיד הבינה, כמובן, שזה דבר בלתי־אפשרי, והעמידה אותו על כך".

כאן אינני בוטח בזכרוני. אם אינני טועה, אמר הקיסר: "אחר־כך זרקה אותו החוצה".
