wieder einmal wie schon so oft in

diesen zwei Jahren dass man mich

aus der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] entfernen werde.

Einmal draussen, wäre ich boycottirt.

Kein Mensch würde mehr etwas

von mir nehmen, am wenigsten ein

Theaterdirector die Uebellaune der

Nfeuen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] wegen eines Judenstücks ris=

kiren.

Ich rief Jauner vorgestern vor

acht Tagen zu mir, las ihm das Ghetto

vor. Er war entzückt, lachte, weinte.

Nur Censurbedenken! Am besten wär's

wenn ich das Stück der Frau des

Statthalters vorläse. Ich willigte ein,

er sprach mit der Gräfin — u. heute

Nachmittag las ich es vor. Grosser

Leseerfolg.

Nachher sprach ich mit dem Statt=

halter über die Affaire Dreyfus, die

merkwürdigerweise gerade jetzt wieder

im Rollen ist — wie vor drei

Jahren zur Zeit als ich das Ghetto

schrieb.

Once out of it, I would be boycotted. Not a soul would take anything from me any longer; least of all would a theatre director risk incurring the displeasure of the N. Fr. Pr. because of a Jewish play.

I called Jauner to my place nine days ago and read the Ghetto to him. He was delighted, laughed, cried. Only, misgivings about censorship! Would be best, he said, if I read the play to the governor’s wife. I consented, he spoke with the Countess—and this afternoon I read it. Reading a great success.

Afterwards I spoke with the governor about the Dreyfus affair which, strangely enough, is active again at this particular time— just as it was three years ago, at the time when I was writing the Ghetto.

והרי ברגע שאהיה בחוץ יחרימו אותי. איש לא ייקח עוד משהו משלי, ופחות מכול יהיה מנהל תאטרון מוכן להסתכן ולעורר את קצפו של .N.Fr.Pr בגלל מחזה על יהודים.

לפני תשעה ימים ביקשתי מיַאוּנֶר שיבוא אלי וקראתי באוזניו את "הגטו". הוא היה מוקסם, צחק, בכה. רק הצנזורה הטרידה אותו! איטיב לעשות אם אקרא את המחזה באוזני אשתו של מושל המחוז, אמר. הסכמתי; הוא דיבר עם הרוזנת, והיום אחר־הצהריים קראתי אותו לפניהם. קריאה מוצלחת מאוד.

אחרי זה שוחחתי עם המושל על פרשת דרייפוס, שבאורח משונה החלה שוב להתגלגל — כמו לפני שלוש שנים בעת שכתבתי את "הגטו".
