Ein zweiter Brief von Széchényi Pascha.

Er schreibt, der erste Günstling den er

schon für die Sachen gewonnen hatte

u. der sie mit dem Gebetsteppich dem

Sultan unterbreiten sollte, habe

es sich dann wieder überlegt. Darauf

habe er sich an einen Zweiten ge=

wendet, der „noch einflussreicher“

sei u. es vielleicht thun werde.

Ich schreibe ihm heute, er möge

nur standhaft bleiben u. einen

courant d'opinion zu schaffen

versuchen: hingestreute Bemerkungen

„das wäre die beste Lösung aller

Schwierigkeiten“ u. dgl. könnten

viel bewirken. Meine Freunde

u. ich würden seine Dienste nie

vergessen.

u. die „Welt“ neben der

Neuen Fr[eien] Pr[esse] erschöpfen jetzt

meine Kräfte, so dass ich nicht

einmal die Energie aufbringe

Another letter from Széchényi Pasha. He writes that the first favorite, whom he had already won for the proposal and who was supposed to put it before the Sultan along with the prayer rug, had then changed his mind again. Thereupon he had turned to another favorite who was “even more influential” and would perhaps do it.

I am writing him today that he should just persevere and try to create a courant d’opinion [current of opinion]: tossed-off remarks—"that would be the best solution of all difficulties,” and the like—could have a great effect. My friends and I would never forget his services.

Work on the Congress and on the Welt in addition to the Neue Freie Presse is now exhausting all my strength, so that I can’t even muster the energy to make entries in this log-book of the new Mayflower.

אִישְל, 29 ביולי [1897]

מכתב שני מאת סֶצֶ׳נִי פֶּחָה. הוא כותב שראשון המקורבים לסולטאן, שהספיק לרכוש אותו להצעות שלנו ושאמור היה להגישן לסולטאן עם שטיח־התפילה, התחרט. בעקבות זה פנה לאחֵר, ש״השפעתו רבה עוד יותר", ואולי הוא יעשה זאת.

אני כותב לו היום שיישאר איתן ברוחו וינסה לחולל courant d'opinion (דעת קהל): שהערות־אגב פה ושם "שעניין זה הוא הפתרון הטוב ביותר לכל הקשיים", וכיוצא באלה, עשויות לפעול רבות, ושידידַי ואני לא נשכח לעולם את שירותיו.

העבודות בשביל הקונגרס ובשביל Die Welt לצד עבודתי ב־.N.Fr.Pr מתישות אותי עתה כל־כך, עד שאיני מוצא עוד כוחות לרשום רישומים ביומן המסע הזה של ה״מֵיפלאוּאֶר" החדשה.
