Gestern Abends kam eine merkwürdige Wendung

in der Banksache vor.

Wir hatten für Abends eine Sitzung der Colo=

nisationscommission ins Burlington Hotel be=

rufen. Gaster, Bentwich, de Haas, Greenberg u. Bänker

Seligmann sollten kommen. G Sonst waren noch

Kellner, Wolffsohn, Cohen, Kann, Heymann da.

Gaster Ich behandelte Seligmann sehr kühl, redete

kaum mit ihm, u. zw. wegen des perfiden Briefes

gegen die Bank, den er im Jewish Chronicle ver=

öffentlicht hatte. — Gaster eröffnete die Discussion

mit Kleinlichkeiten der Colonisations Commission.

Ich liess reden. Als man über die Frage sprach,

wie man den Secretär der Commission bezahlen

sollte, u. die Shillingsschwierigkeiten erörterte,

nahm Seligmann das Wort. Er wolle uns angeben,

woher wir die Mittel nehmen können. Wir

sollten statt der Bank eine Jewish Colonisation

Society gründen. Für eine solche werde sich das

Wohlwollen der „grossen“ Bankers erzielen

lassen. Er spreche zwar ohne Auftrag, glaube

aber, dass eine solche Society nicht zwei sondern

Last night the Bank project took a remarkable turn.

We had called a meeting of the Colonization Committee at the Burlington Hotel for yesterday evening. Gaster, Bentwich, de Haas, Greenberg, and Seligmann the banker were to attend.

Others who were there were Kellner, Wolffsohn, Cohn, Kann, and Heymann. I treated Seligmann very coolly, hardly spoke to him—and the reason for this was the perfidious letter opposing the Bank which he had published in the Jewish Chronicle.

Gaster opened the discussion with petty details of the Colonization Committee. I let them talk.

When they were discussing the question of how to pay the secretary of the committee and talking about the shilling difficulties, Seligmann took the floor. He said he wished to tell us from where we could get the funds. Instead of the Bank we ought to found a Jewish Colonisation Society It would be possible to win the good will of the “big” bankers for such a society. He was speaking unofficially, to be sure, but he thought that such a society would easily raise not two,

אמש חלה תפנית מעניינת בעניין הבנק.

זימנו להערב ישיבה של ועדת־ההתיישבות במלון Burlington. אמורים היו לבוא גאסטֶר, בֶּנטוויץ׳, דֶה האז, גרינבֶּרג והבנקאי זֶליגמן.

מלבדם היו קֶלנֶר, וולפסון, כהן , קאן והיימן. נהגתי בזֶליגמן בקרירות רבה, בקושי שוחחתי אתו, וזאת בגלל המכתב הנלוז נגד הבנק שפרסם ב־Jewish Chronicle.

גאסטֶר פתח את הדיון בעניינים קטנוניים של מה־בכך הנוגעים לוועדת ההתיישבות. נתתי להם לדבר.

כשדנו בשאלה כיצד לשלם למזכיר הוועדה והעלו את קשיי הממון, נטל זֶליגמן את רשות הדיבור. הוא רוצה להצביע על דרכים כיצד נוכל להשיג את האמצעים. במקום בנק, עלינו לייסד Jewish Colonisation Society (חברה יהודית להתיישבות). בשביל חברה כזאת אפשר יהיה להשיג את הסכמתם של הבנקאים "הגדולים". אמנם אין הוא מדבר בשם איש, אבל הוא סבור שחברה מסוג זה יכולה לגייס בקלות לא שני מיליון ליש״ט,
