Fahrplanmässig traf mein Freund

Joë ein, u. nach einer herzlichen

Begrüssung fuhren wir selbander

weiter.

15 Februar [1902] Constantinopel

Seit Newlinskis Tagen zum viertenmal

in Constantinopel.

Es ist die alte Stadt: Farben, Farben u.

Hundegebell — et tout le reste.

Ich fuhr vom Schiffe weg sogleich mit

Dr. Wellisch ins Palais.

Leider hatte unser rumänischer Dampfer

in den Nachtstunden durch hohen

Seegang Zeit verloren, so dass wir

gestern Freitag erst gegen 3 Uhr N[ach]M[ittags]

He gave me some good hints. The chief one: that Cohn needs me badly now.

He also promised to come immediately if I should call him, i.e., if we run onto a sandbank.

Then I went through my nocturnal native city to the station.

My friend Joe arrived on schedule, and after a cordial greeting the two of us continued our trip.

February 15, Constantinople

My fourth time in Constantinople since the days of Newlinski.

It is the same old city: colors, colors, and the barking of dogs— et tout le reste [and all the rest].

I drove to the Palace straight from the boat, in company with Dr. Wellisch.

Unfortunately our Rumanian steamer had lost time during the night because of heavy seas, so that we didn't land at Top-Hane until almost three o’clock yesterday, Friday, afternoon.

הוא נתן לי כמה רמזים טובים. בייחוד שכהן [הסולטאן] זקוק לי עכשיו בדחיפות. הוא אף הבטיח לבוא ללא דיחוי אם אקרא לו, כלומר אם נעלה על שרטון.

אחר־כך הלכתי דרך עיר הולדתי העטופה חשכת לילה אל תחנת הרכבת.

ידידי ג׳וֹ הגיע על־פי לוח הזמנים, ולאחר שבירכנו זה את זה בלבביות המשכנו יחד בנסיעתנו.

15 בפברואר [1902], קושטא

מאז ימי נֶוולינסקי – בפעם הרביעית בקושטא?

אותה עיר כשהיתה: צבעים, צבעים ונביחות כלבים – et tout le reste (וכל השאר). מן האונייה יצאתי מיד עם הד״ר וֶליש אל הארמון.

למרבה הצער התעכבה אוניית הקיטור הרומנית שלנו, בשל ים סוער בלילה, וכך ירדנו ליבשה אתמול, יום ו׳, בטוֹפּהאנֶה רק סמוך לשעה שלוש אחר־הצהריים.
