Montefiore. Ich versprach Goldsmid das Commando über die Military force in El Arisch. Il est à mon dévouement   17 Jan[uar 1903] London Gestern war ein guter Tag. Mittags bei Rothschild. Er sagte mir Claude Montefiore sei nicht in London (was ich schon von Col. Goldsmid, der nach Southampton für mich zu Claude gefahren wusste), habe aber telegraphirt, er werde wenn wichtig Montag hier sein. „Telegraphiren Sie ihm, Lord Roth= schild!“ Er that es sofort u[nd] bestellte auch Herbert Lousada von der J[ewish] c[olonization] a[ssociation], den er nicht kannte. Ich sagte dann: „Um 3 Uhr muss ich ins Foreign Office. Was werden wir thun, wenn dieJ[ewish]c[olonization]a[ssociation] leute nicht mitthun?“ Lord R[othschild]: „Dann machen wir die Subscription. Ich sehe aber nicht, wie Sie sie sich weigern könnten.“  

I promised Goldsmid the command over the military force at El Arish.

January 17, London

 

Yesterday was a good day.

 

At noon with Rothschild. He told me that Claude Montefiore was not in London (which I already knew from Col. Goldsmid, who had gone to Southampton for me to see Claude), but had wired that he would be here on Monday if it was something important. “Telegraph him, Lord Rothschild!”

 

He did so immediately and also sent for Herbert Lousada of the I.C.A. with whom he was not acquainted.

 

Then I said: “I have to go to the Foreign Office at 3 o’clock. What are we going to do if the I.C.A. people don’t cooperate?”

 

Lord Rothschild: “Then we shall make the subscription. But I don’t see how they could refuse.”

17 בינואר [1903], לונדון

אתמול היה יום טוב.

בצהריים אצל רוטשילד. הוא אמר לי שקלוֹד מונטפיורי לא נמצא בלונדון (כבר ידעתי זאת מקוֹלוֹנֶל גוֹלדסמיד שנסע בשבילי אל קלוֹד לסאוּת׳המפּטוֹן), ואולם הוא טִלגרף שאם הדבר חשוב, יהיה כאן ביום ב׳. "טלגרף אליו, לורד רוטשילד!"

הוא אכן עשה זאת מיד וזימן גם את הֶרבֶּרט לוּזאדָה מיק״א, שלא הכיר אותו.

אמרתי אחר־כך: ״בשעה שלוש עלי ללכת ל־Foreign Office (למשרד החוץ). מה נעשה אם אנשי יק״א לא ישתפו פעולה?"

הלורד רוטשילד: "אז נעשה את ההחתמה. אבל אני מעריך שלא יוכלו לסרב".
