Ich weihte ihn also in die egyptische

Expedition ein u[nd] erklärte ihm, was ich

wünschte. Wie befremdete mich aber

seine Antwort. Ich hatte eine jauchzende

Begeisterung erwartet. Die findet man

wol nur bei der Jugend.

Er sagte: „Ich will nicht mehr dumm

sein, wie früher. Meine Antwort

ist: Fünfhundert Gulden.“

Ich bewilligte sie ihm. Als ich aber

Greenbergs Bericht erhielt, bestellte

ich die Arbeit vorläufig ab.

Es ist wahr, er ist ein beladener

u[nd] geplagter Lehrer. Aber auch ich bin

beladen u[nd] geplagt. Wieviel müsste

dann ich verlangen?

For this reason I let him in on the Egyptian expedition and explained to him what I wanted. But how chilled I was by his answer. I had expected jubilant enthusiasm. But that is probably found only among young people.

He said: "I don’t want to be stupid anymore, as I used to be. My answer is: Five hundred guilders."

I agreed to that. But when I received Greenberg’s report I cancelled the assignment for the time being.

It is true, he is an overburdened and troubled teacher. But too am overburdened and troubled. How much ought I to ask for, then?

הכנסתי אותו אפוא בסוד המשלחת למצרים והסברתי לו מה רצוני שיעשה. אך כמה הדהימה אותי תשובתו. ציפיתי להתלהבות גדולה, אך אותה אפשר למצוא רק אצל הנוער.

הוא אמר: "אינני רוצה עוד להיות טיפש כמו קודם. תשובתי היא: חמש מאות גוּלדֶן". אישרתי לו. ואולם אחרי שקיבלתי את הדוח של גרינבֶּרג, ביטלתי לפי שעה את הזמנת העבודה.

נכון, הוא מורה עמוס ומיוסר. אך גם אני עמוס ומיוסר. כמה אפוא הייתי אני צריך לדרוש?

הוועדה [כלומר המשלחת] סבורה שרצוי צ׳רטר אם יהיו התנאים טובים. עד סיכום הבדיקה בעוד חודש, לא נוכל לגבש דעה באשר לתנאים ולאפשרות הביצוע של התיישבות.
